What is primary data in product footprint calculations?

Primary data is product- or supplier-specific data, such as actual material weight, composition, supplier information, production location or verified process data.

Full answer

Primary data comes from the company, supplier or product itself. It is usually more representative than generic data because it reflects the actual product setup or supply chain.

Good primary data can improve product footprint quality, especially for high-impact materials, unusual processes, specific end-of-life scenarios or products where generic assumptions are not representative. However, collecting perfect primary data for every field is rarely realistic at portfolio scale.

Example

A supplier-specific production country, exact product weight or known recycled content percentage is primary data that can improve a footprint calculation.
